week 2

Who was originally the intended audience for this advertisement? house wives
Using your Week 1 audience analysis, determine the response from YOUR audience for each ad and discuss.
Are the elements identified above, color, layout, font, etc. used effectively in each of the ads? at the time if this ad it was effective advertising. It seems like she is having fun doing the laundry.
Does the use of humor always work in advertising? the humor for this is in it's retro style however at the time of the ad humor was used to make hard work seem fun and effortless.
Do you think it is effective? If I was a house wife int he 40's this could be effective especially since i would be very concerned about getting my wash white. unlike now where i just hope that the clothes will learn to pick themselves up and make it to the washing machine.
From your audience analysis, how would your audience respond to the humorous message? it may stay with them as they are looking over the laundry soap and was nicely priced.
Would they think it is funny? yes the message would be delivered.
I'm looking at a Dillard's ad on the website for a magazine I just cancelled called Cookie. http://www.cookiemag.com/magazine the ad is a bright yellow square and written in bold white and orange is "Love it? want it? Get it NOW!" then it flashes to "This weeks TOP TEN" There is a countdown on the bottom that is counting down your time to shop. Right now i have 1 day and 6 hours to shop this weeks top ten. If i roll my mouse over it it takes over the screen and shows this weeks top ten.
Who is the intended audience for this ad? Moms who want be like the TV celebrity moms.
Are the elements identified above, color, layout, font, etc. used effectively in each of the ads? Yes the bright yellow caught my eye and the rollover flash brought my attention from the website to the ad. The countdown makes me think that I only have a limited amount of time to do something and i want to hurry with my homework so i can go shopping.
Does the use of humor always work in advertising? In this instance humor is not used. Dillard's is an upper end department store and they use glamour and glitz to sell their items not humor.
this commercial is a Boost mobile commercial. it has a couple riding a tandem bike. the girl is in front and the geeky guy is in the back they are coming down the street and the girls underarm hair is blowing in the wind. "You think this is wrong?" "what's wrong is cell phone companies charging blah blah blah"It's an add for pay as you go phone service.
Who is the intended audience for this ad? Young men
Are the elements identified above, color, layout, font, etc. used effectively in each of the ads?the colors are muted and so the focus is the girl and hair blowing behind her as they ride together. so yes they are used effectively.
Does the use of humor always work in advertising? yes i think for the intended audience this advertising is effective. I think the age group would think this is a funny commercial. It would stay with them when they are phone shopping and compare the prices to a pay as you go phone and conventional plan.

  1. You found two great ads. I personally am grossed out at the bike - pit hair one but can see young men thinking it is funny. Your analysis of muted color for focus is great. I also think you have hit the intended audience on the head. I also like the Dillards ad. Interesting and good color choices. I agree about creating a sense of urgency, we often don't stop to think when we think we could save money but only during a specified time. Creating a need or scarcity makes people act, look at those late night home shopping infomercials. Your ability to dissect ads and identify audiences will serve you well as you begin to create your own media pieces and ones for your own teaching practice. Keep up the good work. Enjoy your week!
