week 8 Final Post
Oh a long trip to Iowa my children grew antsy and so I created a story. for a very long time this story has rattled around my brain so i finally gave the story life. I think in my own opinion it was perfect... just kidding. I thought the narration was to long and not loud enough. Additionally the pictures stood still too long and when I eased the pic in and out became too much. I fell into the trap of new technology and over used the transitions.
The story was a good story and i think I will use this technique again using a tripod and a better backdrop. I learned that it is easy to be overwhelmed. i also learned that it takes longer than first estimated and much more work than first thought.
8.5 Final Blog Post: The Personal Reflection
Look back at your learning this term. Have your ideas on multimedia changed, grown, solidified?
I believe that multimedia is the next wave. It is the great equalizer of all students and allows for a student to express themselves and still learn. It is a great way for teachers to reach all learners and allow the students to take "teaching" to a new level.
What is your personal vision of Multimedia as an asset to teaching and instruction?
I can see this being used in projects, in the everyday classroom as well as in distance learning. I do think that multimedia should not be used as a solo teaching method. It will not replace classroom teaching but can enhance it.
Discuss three areas of personal growth in the area of Multimedia.
1)cell phones are more than just phones, they are mini computers that connect people in many different ways.
2)the Internet has moved into a whole new direction, the web has become new form of community. Long gone are the days of bulletin boards now it is a whole different universe.
3) video games started out as pong machines. When the greatest graphics were 8 bit and little better than monochrome. Now the ps3 is a bluray hd 1080p. These leaps of growth show the world of video games is not for kids. The gaming systems themselves are now so advanced that they are considered computer processors in their own right.
Relate how you will incorporate meaningful examples multimedia into your learning units to improve instruction. Give specific examples they will fit the level of instruction you hope to work in.
My ultimate goal with multi media is to take it to the level of everyday use. I would like to see students be able to create video announcements. Record them and edit them daily for the next school day.
I would also like teachers to use these tools as a way to teach the students how a lesson is played out. This takes some of the power of teaching and places it into the students hands. This would allow the students at each grade level to create a lesson for their class.
I would like the students to be able to show their parents this tool to create at home videos and slide shows. A new way to track their school progress and monitor how they grow each year.
How will you monitor multimedia for accessibility and use for students with disabilities?
i will be sure that all technology can be adapted and that the adaptive software is available.
How will you create or find alternatives for learning?
I will be sure to keep up on the forums as well as conferences to be open to new technology as it comes. I know that it can be too easy to slip into the same old tools such as office for documents but how many people are aware of the google docs? or other free programs out there? It is important that I stay in the loop of technology and keep my education fresh and ideas new.
Identify how you will stay current in the field of multimedia?
Subscribing to blogs, go to conferences and stay in contact with other teachers in the field. Another way will be through continuing ed. If I get to the point where I hate going to cont ed and see it as a n obligation rather than learning opportunity then I need to take a break.

week 7
Blog Post
a) Find at least one example of a website which incorporates accessible multimedia and share it with me. Be sure you find one not mentioned above. Explain how the designer accommodated particular disabilities.
The site I found is pbskids.org. This website is great for children with visual impairments as well as for children who are not able to read. Each time your mouse rolls over a picture a clear voice speaks up with the name of the show, games, music or video. This allows for an easy way to move you mouse as well as offer a way to navigate the pages.
b) Find at least one example of a website which incorporates multimedia which is not accessible and share via email. Explain how the experience of a disabled person using this website would differ from a person without disabilities.
I know it asks to share this via email but since it is a relative few who are looking for this blog I'm going to post it here. http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/Extra/14-brands-in-danger-of-disappearing-slides.aspx?slide-number=1
I chose this site as it is a link for the msn homepage. To me that would mean that this is a well visited site. When looking at the picture I find that i have a hard time looking away from the bright ads placed right next the picture. Then I have to reposition the page each time I click to the next picture. The wording for the picture is below and is difficult to follow. A person with a visual impairment may have trouble focusing on the correct picture and not be distracted from the bright ads.

Recently the courts are seeing a number of lawsuits filed by advocacy groups on behalf of disabled persons who are not able to navigate and use resources on the Internet. Find at least one instance of a recent court case, summarize the facts, and report on the findings and/or status of the case.
National Federation of the Blind v. Target
This case claimed that individuals who used software to convert web pages into Braille or other form for the visually impaired were unable to access the target site and were not allowed to use their credit cards or redeem gift cards to make a purchase. The case went to court in 2006. Target settled. Part of the settlement agreement was for the website designers to work with the National federation for the Blind in order to create a cohesive website. By Feb 2009 the Target website had to be 100% compatible.

week 6
This blog: http://www.e-learningcentre.co.uk/eclipse/Resources/games. htm contains links to several game research papers. Choose two papers and share what you learned. Look for both pro and con gaming factors, interesting ways to use games, predictions, and research being done in this area. Using what you learned from your pro and con research, discuss whether you agree with the general notion that games are beneficial to the learning environment.
From the websites I studied I found out that there is a crisis in Dar fur and that the performance from manager completion was at 99%. From this I found that I am very positive that video games can be a great motivator for learning. People spend so much time immersed in a virtual world. I myself walk around with my Nintendo DS in my purse when I am stuck with a napping child and I can spend a few minutes finding out my brain age.
On the opposite side gaming cannot be the only form of instruction. It is important that students be taught the material in many different forms. There still are families that boycott technology or that have no forms of technology in their homes. This also doesn't account for the the teachers that don't have the background to teach this lesson or are opposed to type of learning.
Blog Post:
Imagine a virtual manipulative or simulation that would increase the knowledge building of a potential student population you might work with in your future. Define the characteristics of the learners that lead you to identify this as an appropriate strategy to use. Define the learning problem, outline what the virtual world will look like, describe the characters or models you will use, what the learner will need to do, and the learning outcomes. Present your idea for this learning tool in your blog.
I work with my preschool children. What i would imagine is a sim that can teach preschoolers how to search the Internet. The site would be an avatar that the child can create and dress. They student would then move their avatar around a search page in a localized controlled world. The world would be password protected and available only to the student and teacher in the class room. The students would learn to move their avatar using mouse controls, acquire rewards such as accessories: clothing, jewelry, food, animals. The students would also be able to play games which can increase in difficulty by the number of times used. The games would be age appropriate from shape sorter, color matcher, alphabet sounds, animals and color page. At some point it would be nice to have a chat feature. This feature will offer preset responses that can teach the child to manipulate a chat and be warned about security.

week 5
http://tmcyouth.com/media/part-7-sunday-school-pupils/
I found this vidcast fro a round table discussion on Sunday school. Since right now i am working with the Sunday school that is what I am focusing my project on. I like the feel of the podcast because it is something you can take with you and listen to in the car, the gym or where ever. With new technology become more advanced it is easy to take the information with you as well as the video.
discuss how you envision using the Web 2.0 tools presented thus far.
actually I have begun using the tools in my everyday life. My children and I visit the website starfall.com almost everyday. I use the tools in the pbskids.org links and i am often searching site using search me. I can see finding a way for students to take these sites to a higher level. Right now there are so many different sites that do the same thing. I think it is only a matter of time before the sites eventually dwindle down to one. I use to visit a site called lookybook.com where you could read children's books online. They had to close due to lack of funding. It was nice to find new books on the site but the upkeep must have been extremely high. As the technology gets better the sites will eventually dwindle down to the most useful. Then the use of web 2.0 to connect students to technology. I can also see eventually the textbooks that students use in e-ink form. That would allow the students to keep all texts on a single flash drive that can be kept at home and at school.
The prevalence of technology also will drive the price down. this will allow all economic levels to access the same information. It can be a great uniting force.

week 4
The three things i learned and applied to this project were:
1- color usage
2- less is more on the wording and pictures
3- sound is fun and represents the idea

week 3
There are few things I would change. The homepage is content heavy. I would cut down some of the banners and instead design links with smaller banner pics. Secondly the larger words are overpowering the smaller content. I would take the larger words and put the smaller words underneath. I would align the banners in a more uniform matter. I would take the schedule and place it at the top. I would keep the banner boxes and the red on black.
